The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be difficult to recreate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as the national team coach.

Southgate indicated his intention to dedicate his efforts toward working with the next generation and combating what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Away from Coaching

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was prompted regarding rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and other leagues.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Leading up to the publication of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, the author shared that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for young people, utilizing insights from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader feels that his time managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, he observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

Southgate stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the cultural focus often centers on disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s new release, the book Dear England, is set to provide further insights on management and public spirit based on his remarkable career.
